We have many visitors, and we want to create a good experience where there is room for all our guests. Therefore, all groups of more than 20 people must reserve their visit in advance. ArtCenter College of Design is located in Pasadena, California, nine miles north of Los Angeles and east of Hollywood, in an area that will soon host General Motors’ new design campus. As Pasadena developed during the past century, it became shaped around the ubiquitous use of the automobile, which brought benefits as well as challenges.

East Asian traditions were referenced with the play between positive and negative (building and courtyard) space. At its opening, critics derided the building’s windowless, blank wall along the Grand Street sidewalk, but Isozaki deliberately designed the building to face inward towards the California Plaza development. 8 House, designed by famous Danish architect Bjarke Ingels, is a popular destination for students of ... And with the Grønnegården garden in the middle of the hospital, there was plenty of access to sunshine and fresh air. Two large ports opened the hospital towards the streets of Amaliegade and Bredgade. One of the central operating rooms is now the museum’s Assembly Hall, with optimal natural light.

I also like that the museum’s exhibits prompt visitors to reflect on the costs and consequences of conflict, making for a thought-provoking and meaningful experience. The museum’s impressive Arsenal Hall, with its high vaulted ceilings, is an architectural curiosity. It is filled with an armada of historical guns, canons, mortars, missiles, and howitzers setting the tone for the intriguing journey that lies ahead.

These designers are still celebrated, but today a new breed of designers are making their own statements on the streets of Copenhagen. The Lyngby Open-Air Museum features an extensive range of exhibits that together paint a vivid picture of rural life in Denmark and surrounding regions from the 1650s to the 1950s. The museum’s centerpiece is its collection of five original Viking ships, discovered submerged in the Roskilde Fjord in 1962.

From furniture and fashion to posters and pottery, discover what makes Danish design so special at this impressive museum in an 18th-century Rococo building in the city centre. This year, Copenhagen has been designated the World Capital of Architecture by UNESCO. Throughout the summer, Designmuseum Danmark offers a number of activities that focus on the architecture in and around the museum’s beautiful building from 1757. You can, among other things, go on city walks and experience Frederiksstaden’s historic setting and new urban design or get an insight into the museum’s unique architecture and design history in guided tours at the museum.

I love that the museum’s Learning Space offers hands-on activities, allowing visitors of all ages to get creative and engage directly with the principles of Danish design. In 2022, Designmuseum Danmark was reinaugurated after a two-year-long remodel, which included a restoration of the façade and an installation of 2500 square metres of marble flooring. Govan and Wynn Resorts co-founder Elaine Wynn sit on both the Vegas museum and LACMA boards. Govan does not expect any conflicts of interest to arise, and points out that many arts leaders occupy multiple board seats across the city and the country. Wynn, who is a LACMA board co-chair, has already given LACMA $50 million — one of the largest single gifts in LACMA’s history — Govan notes, adding that he doesn’t know how much more the L.A. Opened earlier this year, the Danish Architecture Center will be the legacy of Copenhagen’s year in the architectural spotlight.

It is situated on the Copenhagen waterfront in the Tetris-like BLOX building which itself is a testament to modern architectural ingenuity. Designed by the internationally renowned architectural firm OMA, DAC’s exterior is a striking blend of glass and steel, resembling a stack of blocks that house a mix of offices, residences, and public spaces. As an extension of this exhibition, the museum introduces ACUTE, a new experimental space for contemporary art and design, where changing exhibitions will put contemporary themes and new talents up for debate.

Designmuseum Danmark is housed on the premises of what was once the Royal Frederik’s Hospital, built in 1751 as Denmark’s first public hospital. It has also been home to the design studio and furniture school of Kaare Klint, one of the originators of modern Danish design. We take good care of the building, and are glad our guests can enjoy this listed building where so much Danish design history has been created. Join us on an exciting city walk that examines the city’s design in the ‘spaces’ between the buildings in the historic district of Frederiksstaden. Together with one of Designmuseum Danmark’s guides, we take a closer look at the many iconic designs that are such an integral part of the city that you sometimes forget that they are actually design. The maintenance hole cover, the Copenhagen pavement with the cobblestone band in the middle and the Copenhagen lamp that hangs over the city’s streets.

The extensive weapons collection is a standout, from gleaming medieval swords to the beautiful—if such a word can be used in this context— ivory-inlaid pistols and muskets. Additionally, the royal suits of armor are almost works of art unto themselves. The Armory Hall upstairs includes everything from military equipment and uniforms to paintings, personal diaries, and weapons, all of which weave a fascinating narrative of Danish military history.

Through photographs, posters, and personal testimonies, you’ll learn about the significant struggles and victories of the workers, from the fight for an eight-hour workday to the establishment of workers’ rights. The lush greenery, including the impressive Palm House, offers a tranquil retreat from the bustling city and provides a deeper understanding of global plant diversity. The excellent collection owes its existence to the art patronage of Heinrich Hirschsprung, a Danish tobacco magnate who supported many Danish artists. A standout exhibit is the World War II section, where you can explore Denmark’s role during this tumultuous period. From a recreated bomb shelter that offers a sense of what life was like during air raids to personal stories of resistance fighters and the Danish public.

These collections offer a broader context, tracing the international influences that have shaped Danish design. The museum’s reopening will be commemorated with a variety of different events where guests can experience new exhibitions, a new shop and café, and new facilities in the garden. It is also a chance to get closer to a unique example of architectural heritage in the heart of Copenhagen.

The SMK also offers engaging activities for families and children, including the Children’s Workshop, where young visitors can try their hand at various art techniques. Additionally, the museum boasts a beautiful sculpture garden, a perfect spot to relax and soak in the artistic ambiance. Here, you’ll find a comprehensive overview of Danish design in the 21st century, showcasing everything from furniture to fashion, ceramics to graphic design. The contemporary design duo Mathias Mentze and Alexander Ottenstien have created a special showcase for the unique collection of Japanese sward fittings (tsubas) in one of the rooms.

There are diapering areas in the toilets in the entrance hall, and breastfeeding is allowed everywhere in the museum. Due to construction work, there will be limited parking availability from late February to April 2024. We will strive to reserve spaces for parking with handicap signs, but access will be severely limited during this period. The Danish Design Archive and the Poster Collection are located on the museum's first floor.
